MPs are moving toward a vote next month on the first step in a major restoration of the Palace of Westminster, as Andy Burnham’s government gives new momentum to a project that has been stalled for more than a decade.
The 19th-century building has been left in limbo while MPs, peers and parliamentary authorities disagree over how best to carry out repairs. The Palace is affected by leaks, fires, asbestos, and outdated plumbing and wiring.
Successive governments have been reluctant to champion the renovation amid concerns about public reaction to its cost. The main refurbishment options under consideration have been estimated to cost between £11 billion and £39 billion.
