A celebrity has lost a High Court case seeking to permanently prevent two news organisations from identifying him and reporting allegations of sexual misconduct. The man denies the allegations.
Mr Justice Nicklin ruled that the injunction should be refused. However, a temporary order barring publication of the man’s identity and the allegations will remain in force during the period allowed for an appeal.
ITN and The Guardian have argued that publishing the allegations is in the public interest. They concern claims that the man used his status in attempts to engage in inappropriate sexual activity with a large number of girls and young women.
The man told the court that publication would be highly likely to lead him to take his own life and sought to prevent any reporting or broadcast of the allegations.
