Como 1907 recorded the biggest win in Champions League history on Wednesday, defeating RC Lens 9-1 away from home. The Italian side, playing in the competition for the first time, led 3-0 at half-time, with German centre-back Marc-Oliver Kempf among its scorers.
The previous record was shared by two 8-0 victories: Liverpool’s home win over Besiktas in 2007 and Real Madrid’s against Malmö in 2015. Como had scored its eighth goal by the 69th minute, but the record-breaking ninth did not arrive until stoppage time, when 18-year-old Matteo Papaccioli scored in the 90th minute plus two.
The Champions League’s highest-scoring match remains Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 victory over Legia Warsaw in 2016. Bayern Munich have won three times by a seven-goal margin, most recently beating Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 just over two years ago. That remained the only previous occasion on which a team had scored nine goals in a Champions League match.
Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Slavia Prague 2-1 away, extending the Czech side’s winless run in the competition to 23 matches since its first appearance in 2007. Only AEK Athens and the Romanian club then known as Steaua Bucharest have endured similarly long runs without a Champions League victory.
Nicolò Tresoldi scored again for Club Brugge, heading in from a corner in the 25th minute to put his team ahead in a 2-1 win at PSV Eindhoven. It was his fifth goal in this Champions League campaign. Kodai Sano equalised in the 54th minute, before Carlos Forbs scored the winner in the 65th.
