Europe is watching the U.S. midterm results with a mix of hope and schadenfreude after Democrats regained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and won several governorships.
The party scored victories in Republican strongholds including South Carolina, Texas and Kansas. Some races had yet to be called on Wednesday morning, but the results already amounted to a major rebuke of President Donald Trump.
After two years of Trump’s verbal attacks on Europe and threats of tariffs, the shift in Washington’s balance of power offered European leaders a rare moment of relief. It may not make the United States a more predictable partner, but Trump could be too occupied by domestic politics to direct his usual criticism at European allies.
