Democrats made sweeping gains in state legislative races, winning at least 330 seats and taking full control of 22 state governments. The party also became the majority in 12 statehouse chambers where it had previously been in the minority, according to the report.
The results give Democrats greater power to shape policy on health care, voting and taxation in state capitals, including Texas, Georgia and North Carolina. In Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Nevada, the party will control both legislative chambers and the governor’s office. Democrats were also close to securing the same combination in Arizona.
The victories followed years of organizing in some states. In Wisconsin, Democrats won both the State Senate and Assembly after the fight to undo a Republican gerrymander of legislative districts, while retaining the governor’s office.
