The Democrats won the 2026 US midterm elections by a wide margin, according to the reported results. Republicans lost control of Congress, with the election deciding races across the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Voters chose 35 of the Senate’s 100 members. Each state has two senators regardless of its population, and senators serve six-year terms, with roughly one-third of the seats contested every two years. Seven states were a particular focus for both parties. Michigan was the only one where Democrats were defending a seat; Republicans held the seats in the other six.
All 435 House seats were also up for election. Each congressional district elects one representative, with districts designed to represent roughly equal numbers of people. As a result, large districts in the western United States carry no more weight in the House than densely populated urban districts.
