Eurozone governments have been asked to nominate candidates to succeed European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde by Friday, Nov. 6, 2026. The Council of the EU has begun the appointment process, according to a statement from a Eurogroup spokesperson on Tuesday.
Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis called on member states to submit their nominations by the deadline. Eurozone finance ministers are due to discuss the candidates at their gathering next Monday.
Lagarde announced last week that she would leave her position by Feb. 7, 2027, setting in motion a leadership change at the Frankfurt-based central bank.
