Massimo Garavaglia said a signature drive has begun to seek a no-confidence vote against Massimiliano Romeo, the Lega’s leader in the Senate. Speaking to ANSA, Garavaglia said he viewed the initiative with regret and believed it showed a lack of willingness to unite the party.

Garavaglia said party rules should require a meeting of the Senate group. He added that those deciding how to proceed would need to explain their reasons.

At the Lega’s extraordinary congress, Garavaglia ran for party secretary against Matteo Salvini and received 24% of the vote. Romeo, who also leads the Lega in Lombardy, backed Garavaglia’s candidacy. Together with regional governor Attilio Fontana and party members described as “nordisti,” Romeo had called for the party to be renewed.
