Kimi Antonelli has been crowned Formula 1 world champion at the age of 20, becoming the youngest driver to win the title and returning an Italian driver to the top of the sport. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the achievement as a source of national pride, praising Antonelli’s talent, commitment, determination and dedication in a social media post.
Sports and Youth Minister Andrea Abodi said Antonelli’s victory placed Italy once again at the centre of global attention. He highlighted the driver’s age, his Italian nationality and the significance of the achievement 73 years after Alberto Ascari’s last Italian Formula 1 championship victory.
Abodi also credited Antonelli’s talent, determination and composure, saying the success demonstrated the value of young Italian athletes. He called for talented young people to be recognised, supported and given the conditions needed to develop their abilities.
Singer Vasco Rossi congratulated the Mercedes driver, calling him “genius”, “extraordinary” and “incredible”. Rossi emphasised Antonelli’s Italian identity and described him as a 20-year-old from Casalecchio, in Emilia.
Former motorcycle world champion Valentino Rossi said Antonelli’s performance had moved him and praised the difference he made during the season, particularly against his teammate. Rossi said Antonelli could become one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1 history and explained that he had followed him since his karting days.
MotoGP rider Marco Bezzecchi also sent a message to Antonelli, saying he was looking forward to embracing his friend. Bezzecchi praised the young driver for handling the pressure with the calmness of a true champion.
