CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after a heavy collision during a second-division match against Andorra/">FC Andorra. The 30-year-old was taken to hospital, where his condition later worsened, according to his club.
The incident happened in stoppage time, when goalkeeper Jesús Owono ran out and fouled De Miguel at speed shortly beyond the halfway line. Owono was shown a straight red card. De Miguel appeared to have head injuries and was in pain after the collision. Emergency responders reportedly resuscitated him on the way to hospital.
An initial update said De Miguel was breathing on his own but remained unconscious. Tenerife first described his condition as serious but stable. The club then said in a statement that his medical condition had deteriorated neurologically, adding that it would provide further information later.
The referee abandoned the match at 2-2 as players from both teams reacted with shock. FC Andorra expressed its support for De Miguel, his family and Tenerife. Real Madrid and other Spanish clubs also sent messages wishing him strength and a recovery.
