An age-based split is shaping the Los Angeles mayor’s race between incumbent Karen Bass, 73, and challenger Nithya Raman, 45, with the candidates drawing different generations and priorities. Raman campaigned on a recent weekend at a Hollywood art gallery party that began at 9 p.m., an event with pink lighting, pop music and Gen Z influencers posing for Instagram and TikTok. There, Raman described the contest as a generational election. Sable Minx, a 28-year-old social media creator, said she works three jobs and still cannot afford to live on her own or have her own space; she said new leadership resonated with her.
Older voters have a different view. The next morning, Alton Reed, 80, joined his wife and other supporters with fliers to walk precincts for Bass. Reed questioned the push for change from young people, saying it reflects a general attitude of wanting a new direction whether or not it is warranted.
The contrast illustrates the tension underpinning the choice facing Los Angeles voters as they decide whether to keep their mayor or elect a new one. From policy proposals to celebrity endorsements, the campaign’s most consistent subtext has been the age-based divide in a contest drawing national attention.
