President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has told allies he does not intend to name the finance minister for his fourth term early in an effort to reassure financial markets, according to the report. Lula has argued that bringing the announcement forward would be an undue concession to a sector that has often opposed him.

He is expected to choose the head of the economic team after returning from an overseas trip that is due to begin in a week. Lula plans to travel to Turkey for COP31 and is considering continuing to a meeting of Southeast Asian countries in the Philippines. If he does, he would return at the end of November.

The names under consideration include Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles. The possibility that Dario Durigan will remain in the post has not been ruled out.

Announcements of other cabinet members are expected to begin in three to four weeks. For now, consultations are under way with leaders of parties that could join the government, led by Workers’ Party president Edinho Silva and other senior party figures.
