Former Brazilian environment minister Marina Silva is expected to attend COP31 in Turkey, where she is likely to meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Silva, now a federal deputy representing the Rede party in São Paulo, is due to travel later this week on an official mission for the Chamber of Deputies.
She may also travel with Lula on the 10th if he invites her to join the presidential delegation. Silva is a prominent figure in environmental affairs and regularly attends United Nations climate conferences.
Silva has been mentioned as a possible candidate to return to the Environment Ministry in Lula’s fourth term, but no move by the president on the matter has been reported. If appointed, it would be her third time in the role. Other possibilities include keeping current minister João Paulo Capobianco or appointing a member of Congress as part of efforts to build support in the legislature.
