President Sergio Mattarella has called for the Italian Armed Forces to renew their capabilities as threats expand beyond conventional warfare. In a message to Defence Minister Guido Crosetto for National Unity and Armed Forces Day, he pointed to disinformation, activity in cyberspace and space, and the growing use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems as areas where aggression is increasing.
Mattarella said the evolving security landscape requires the rapid integration of new technologies and practical capabilities to meet future challenges. He also described the Armed Forces’ daily work as important to protecting the country from external threats and upholding international law, while conflicts continue to affect parts of the world, including Europe.
The president said this year’s observance carries particular significance as Italy marks 80 years since the people chose the Republic. He linked the military’s oath of allegiance to the Constitution with the responsibility to preserve its principles and connect the country’s past with hope for future generations, so that the horrors of the world wars are not repeated.
The message also commemorated Italy’s national unification and the achievement of freedom and democracy through the Liberation struggle. Mattarella said the Republic’s pursuit of peace and international cooperation had given Italy an authoritative role.
Mattarella marked the day by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Crosetto, the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate, Lorenzo Fontana and Ignazio La Russa, and Constitutional Court President Giovanni Amoroso attended the ceremony.
