Italian President Sergio Mattarella has issued a stark warning regarding the economic pressures facing citizens, citing inflation and stagnant wages as primary aggressors against living standards. In his message for Savings Day, the Head of State highlighted that ongoing geo-economic and geopolitical conflicts are exacerbating these issues through rising prices and an ineffective wage dynamic.
Mattarella argued that full European integration serves as the most effective tool to defend against purely speculative finance. He pointed out that obstacles within the single market, combined with a relative weakness in long-term savings, are diverting significant resources elsewhere. According to the President, these factors hinder investments that could otherwise strengthen society.
While acknowledging the emergence of new financial instruments, Mattarella stressed that their operation must adhere to established principles designed to protect families. He recalled Article 47 of the Constitution, which links savings to credit discipline. The President noted that these constitutional precepts are essential for valuing the earnings workers manage to set aside, channeling those savings into safe and productive investments. This approach is described as particularly significant during times when external conflicts and economic instability threaten citizens' livelihoods.
