German chancellor Friedrich Merz said Europe must help shape any agreement to end the war in Ukraine as U.S. President Donald Trump renews efforts to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Merz made the remarks in Berlin on Tuesday alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Europe must and wants to play a role in this process,” Merz said. He argued that key parts of a settlement, including sanctions and the security architecture, could only be resolved with European involvement.
Merz also described the U.S. move to invite Putin to the G20 as “completely unacceptable,” saying Ukraine’s fate must not be discussed without Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said a peace agreement could not rule out Ukraine joining the European Union or benefiting from what he called the bloc’s “security infrastructure.”
