European Parliament President Roberta Metsola cautioned lawmakers on Wednesday against becoming too dependent on artificial intelligence in decision-making, as the institution prepares guidelines on how MEPs should use the technology.
Speaking at an event on AI in the Parliament, Metsola said that using AI to draft an amendment should not take the place of constructive discussion with colleagues. She also stressed that AI-assisted legal research cannot replace the judgment and critical thinking required to make difficult decisions.
Metsola said lawmaking must remain subject to democratic accountability and argued that people should be informed when AI is used.
