Milan has added 14 new names to the Famedio, the city’s pantheon inside the Monumental Cemetery. The ceremony honored citizens remembered for their contributions and for the example they set across cultural, civic and professional fields.

The new inductees include singer Ornella Vanoni, former footballer Franco Baresi and priest Don Antonio Mazzi. The list also includes politician and intellectual Gianni Cervetti, publisher Ulrico Carlo Gustavo Hoepli, businesswoman Gioia Marchi Falck, journalist Bruno Pizzul, activist and journalist Vera Vigevani Jarach, and Luisa Muraro, who helped found the Women’s Bookstore.

Also honored were civil lawyer Laura Hoesch, photographer Giovanni Gastel, architect Giancarlo Consonni, partisan and anti-fascist priest Giovanni Barbareschi, and children’s publishing pioneer Rossellina Archinto Marconi.

Mayor Giuseppe Sala said Milan’s history had generated reserves of passion, creativity and hard work that could help restore confidence and optimism in Italy. He described the ceremony as an opportunity to recognize the city’s achievements and the contribution of the people commemorated at the Famedio.

Before the ceremony, Sala paid tribute to Umberto Veronesi at his tomb. The physician was buried in the Famedio about a month earlier, following a decision made after the recent death of his wife.

City Council president Elena Buscemi recalled the biographies of the new inductees and their role in Milan’s growth. She said their lives, shaped by human, civic and professional ideals, had become examples that the city was proud to honor.
