Hugo Motta, president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, and Davi Alcolumbre, president of the Senate, have confirmed they will attend the international “Women Who Move Justice” conference in Brasília. Their participation was described as another gesture of rapprochement with the government.

The conference will run from Wednesday to Friday and is organized by Sheila de Carvalho, national secretary for Access to Justice at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Discussions will include women’s representation in institutions and policies to expand women’s access to justice.

Participants are also expected to discuss judicial reform, an issue advocated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as well as his political opponents during the election campaign. The event comes as Lula faces renewed calls to nominate a woman to Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court.

The Senate rejected Jorge Messias’s nomination to the court this year, after Lula declined to nominate Rodrigo Pacheco, whom Alcolumbre had supported.
