Nine people died on Sunday when a private Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The aircraft went down at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, or 5:50 p.m. GMT, near the Cresthaven neighborhood.
The plane had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that everyone aboard the aircraft was killed.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash. Videos shared on social media appeared to show the aircraft striking the ground and erupting into a large fireball, leaving a crater in the pavement.
Flight-tracking platform Flightradar reported that the aircraft’s last recorded data showed it flying at 8,750 feet, approximately 2,670 meters, with a maximum vertical speed of more than 32,000 feet per minute, or about 585 kilometers per hour.
The Palm Beach County sheriff’s office said all lanes of Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and North 10th Avenue, remained closed until further notice.
