Novo Nordisk has introduced an oral version of Wegovy in Spain, expanding the availability of its weight-management treatment, which was previously offered as an injection. The company describes it as the only oral GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for this indication.

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Ozempic, which is indicated for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is intended for weight control in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

According to data cited by Novo Nordisk, the treatment led to an average weight loss of approximately 17% when combined with lifestyle interventions. The company also reported losses of up to 34.4% in one in three people.

The daily tablet is available in pharmacies with a prescription from a healthcare professional. A 30-tablet pack costs between €178 and €236, depending on the dose, and is not publicly funded.

The injectable version of Wegovy competes in Spain with Lilly’s Mounjaro, which has been available by prescription and without public funding since summer 2024.
