Representatives of Novo are expected to attend a meeting of Brazil’s Liberal Party (PL) next Wednesday, the 4th, where senators are set to launch Rogério Marinho’s bid for president of the Senate. The gathering is also expected to include representatives of other parties, with the aim of showing that Marinho has broad support on the right against incumbent Davi Alcolumbre, who plans to seek re-election in February 2027.
Novo has three elected senators: Marcel Van Hattem of Rio Grande do Sul, Deltan Dallagnol of Paraná and Lahesio Bonfim of Maranhão. The PL will have 29 senators in 2027. The party is also working to secure support from current and newly elected senators from the Progressistas (PP), União Brasil, Republicanos and PSDB.
“We are working to build support with the caucus, allied parties and their members as individuals,” said Carlos Portinho, the PL’s Senate caucus leader. Opposition estimates suggest that between 45 and 50 senators are theoretically committed to Marinho.
However, the Senate vote is secret, leaving room for defections. Marinho has argued that right-wing senators should disclose whom they voted for, according to Folha’s report.
