Pará Governor Hana Ghassan has decided to dismiss Finance Secretary René de Oliveira after he voted in favor of raising the state tax on fuels. The dismissal is based on a “breach of trust” and is due to be published in the state’s Official Gazette on Thursday (5), according to the report.

The move follows a wave of criticism directed at governors on social media after Brazil’s National Council for Fiscal Policy (Confaz) ratified agreements increasing the ICMS tax on fuels from February 2027. Representatives of all 26 states and the Federal District approved the measure.

Ghassan was reportedly angered by the decision because she said she had been caught by surprise by her secretary’s position. De Oliveira had not consulted her beforehand, the report said.

Under the increase, gasoline and ethanol prices are expected to rise by 4.5%, while diesel is set to become 11.1% more expensive. Cooking gas is also expected to increase by 4.8%.
