Pope Leo called for an end to the violence of war during a Mass at Rome’s Verano Cemetery marking the Commemoration of the Dead. He prayed for people who had recently lost someone close, with particular attention to those whose loved ones were taken by war.
The Pope said that the tears of mothers, children and older people should move the consciences of those able to stop the fighting. His appeal came as he reflected on a passage from Matthew’s Gospel: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
During the celebration, Leo also referred to Saint Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures and its words about “sister bodily death.”
