Former British chancellor Rachel Reeves has said that the United Kingdom’s future should be in the European Union, renewing the debate over the country’s relationship with the bloc ahead of a UK-EU summit later this month.
Writing in The Sunday Times, Reeves argued that Brexit had damaged Britain and said she was proud of progress made to strengthen ties with the European Union.
“Brexit has made us poorer, weaker and less secure,” Reeves wrote. She also said there was a debate to be held about the UK’s future relationship with Europe and welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s leadership on the issue.
Reeves was dismissed as chancellor by Burnham after he entered Downing Street. She added that her pro-European instincts had never been in doubt during her time at the Treasury.
