Work to upgrade the Saxmundham rail junction in Suffolk has been completed, with the changes intended to support the movement of construction materials to Sizewell C.

The nine-day project replaced the manually operated junction with a powered system and installed modern equipment. Network Rail said the improvements would increase operational flexibility and railway performance. The junction connects the Leiston branch line with the east Suffolk line.

Construction of Sizewell C on the Suffolk coast has not yet begun, although preparations are under way. Network Rail described the junction work as an important part of supporting the project’s transport strategy, which aims for 60% of materials to arrive by rail and sea.

Buses replaced trains during the work. Network Rail thanked passengers for their patience with the disruption.
