São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes said his administration will once again identify the city’s Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) as the Municipal Police, following approval on Tuesday of a constitutional amendment on public security that provides for the creation of municipal police forces.

In an interview with Painel on Wednesday, Nunes said the new name would appear on police vehicles and newly made uniforms. “I have always personally referred to it as the Municipal Police, because that is what it is,” he said, adding that the city would now change the vehicle decals and the uniforms as they are produced.

The administration had already placed Municipal Police decals on vehicles in 2025 and run social media campaigns explaining the change to residents. Those campaigns also referred to Smart Sampa, the city’s camera-monitoring program.

The earlier measures were based on a law signed by Nunes in March 2025. However, a court granted a request from the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office and ordered the law suspended.
