Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned on Tuesday night, just over a week after a deadly rail disaster that has shocked the country. Puente is a close ally of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The resignation followed an hours-long grilling by the Spanish parliament’s standing committee. The body is acting on behalf of parliament while it remains dissolved ahead of the snap election scheduled for Nov. 29.
Puente described his decision as “a matter of political dignity” and said he believed it was the right choice for “a modern country, not a failed state as some claim.”
