Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that Spain’s Council of Ministers will approve a specific royal decree on Tuesday to support victims of the railway accident in Urda. The package will double the assistance provided under compulsory insurance and establish a mechanism to advance compensation payments.

The measures will also include a temporary incapacity procedure for those injured and the creation of comprehensive support offices in the victims’ provinces of residence. Sánchez said the measures are broadly similar to those adopted after the Adamuz accident in Córdoba in January 2026.

The prime minister made the announcement in Barcelona during the World in Progress forum, organised by Prisa. He praised the work of emergency teams, 112 services, the Civil Guard, firefighters, the Military Emergency Unit, healthcare workers and hospitals in Castilla-La Mancha, as well as the residents of Urda who assisted during the response.

Sánchez said the government’s main responsibility is to restore citizens’ confidence in high-speed rail. He also stated that independent investigators and the courts are working to determine what happened and promised that they would receive the resources needed to establish the causes transparently and rigorously.
