Stage Entertainment has reversed its decision to reschedule performances of The Lion King and El alma al aire, allowing workers on both musicals to exercise their right to strike on Wednesday, November 11. The change came after the CGT union filed a legal challenge against the producer.
The company’s updated online calendars show no performances on either November 9 or November 11 at Madrid’s Lope de Vega Theatre, where The Lion King is staged, and the Coliseum, where El alma al aire is showing. November 11 is listed as a working day for employees, according to elDiario.es, which reported that the arrangement respects their right to strike.
The producer initially announced that the November 11 performances had been cancelled because of the general strike and said ticket holders could exchange their tickets for another available performance at no extra cost. That notice was later removed. The updated schedule does not currently offer tickets for either date, and Stage Entertainment had not responded to the outlet’s request for comment.
The CGT and CNT have also raised concerns about alleged restrictions on strike rights at other theatre productions, including Six, managed by Smedia, and shows produced by ATG Entertainment: Les Misérables, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked and The Play That Goes Wrong. No changes had been reported at those venues at the time of publication.
