A Swiss watch worth $290,000 (about €259,000) was returned by post to the Tokyo store it was stolen from, accompanied by a handwritten apology, according to Japanese media reports. Investigators identified the watch by its serial number, the reports said, citing sources familiar with the investigation.

The watch, made by Audemars Piguet, was stolen the previous week. A man posing as a customer tried it on before running out of the store with it on his wrist.

Tokyo police are continuing to search for the man on suspicion of theft, according to the Asahi Shimbun. The store initially declined to comment.
