São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Rio Grande do Sul Governor-elect Luciano Zucco are expected to attend a celebration marking 30 years since their graduation from the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (Aman). The event is scheduled for December 12 in Resende, according to the Painel column of Folha de S.Paulo.

Members of their graduating class said both men had confirmed they would attend, likely with their families, as is customary. Zucco’s office said the celebration is on the governor-elect’s schedule. Tarcísio’s office did not comment.

Aman holds reunions each year for classes marking milestone anniversaries. The program typically includes a welcome from the academy’s commander, a tour of its facilities, talks, videos, and group meals.

Zucco served in the Cavalry, while Tarcísio was in the Engineering branch. Their classmates included Wagner Rosário, a São Paulo state audit court member and former federal comptroller general, and Arthur Lima, São Paulo state’s secretary of justice.

The class’s top-ranked cadet in 1996 was Jean Lawand Júnior, now a retired colonel. During an investigation into an alleged coup plot, Brazil’s federal police identified messages in which Lawand asked Mauro Cid to help persuade then-President Jair Bolsonaro to issue an order for the armed forces to act against Lula’s 2022 election victory. Lawand denied encouraging a coup when questioned by the January 8 parliamentary inquiry, saying he had sought a message from Bolsonaro to calm the country. The inquiry called for his indictment, but he was not included among those accused by federal police.

With Zucco’s election and Tarcísio’s reelection, Brazil will have two governors from the Army for the first time in its democratic period, the report said.
