A 19-year-old has admitted stabbing a 17-year-old boy in an attack on Barry Island that resulted in the victim’s lower leg being amputated. The incident happened during a bank holiday trip in May 2026, Newport Crown Court heard.

Idris Ahmed, from Riverside in Cardiff, had previously denied charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife. He changed his pleas to guilty on Tuesday. The victim cannot be named because of his age.

The court heard that the 17-year-old had tried to calm a dispute between Ahmed’s group and his own friends when Ahmed attacked him without warning. The victim told a jury he lost a significant amount of blood and repeatedly lost consciousness after being stabbed.

He was airlifted to hospital and underwent four operations. Despite receiving several blood transfusions, oxygen was not reaching his leg properly, and doctors determined that an amputation through the knee was necessary.

After the attack, Ahmed fled and discarded the knife near a building. An eyewitness saw him do so and later identified him in an identity parade. A woman taking selfies on the beach with her partner also captured Ahmed fleeing, the court heard. Ahmed had no previous convictions.

Judge Daniel Williams described grievous bodily harm with intent as a “very, very serious offence”. Ahmed is due to be sentenced on 27 November, with pre-sentence reports to inform how long he will spend in a young offenders institution.
