Donald Trump called Greenland the greatest gift the United States had ever received during a Tuesday call with Fox News about the midterm elections. The U.S. State Department reshared the broadcast on X.

“Europe just gave the United States the greatest gift we were ever given,” Trump said, adding that the gift was Greenland and that the U.S. had “just got” the island. Another person on the call quickly clarified that Trump was referring to “a military deal.”

Until September, Trump had repeatedly advocated for the United States to take control of Greenland, citing national security concerns. Greenland is a large, mineral-rich, self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
