President Trump used his final in-person appearance before voters headed to the polls to discuss the renovation of the Reflecting Pool, focusing on its pipes and other landscaping details rather than the issues driving the midterm election.
Standing in front of the newly reopened pool on Monday, with the Washington Monument reflected behind him, Trump acknowledged that the party of a sitting president typically loses midterm elections, adding that his side had “gave this a very strong shot.”
He described the pool’s pipes as “totally renovated” and said the new system was important for dealing with algae. Trump also called the work a complete job and said he was proud of it. A poster board beside him showed an aerial image of the pool with the caption: “Back, and more beautiful than ever!”
The appearance came as voters were focused on high gas and grocery prices and a new war in the Middle East. Trump instead spoke about features of the site, including drain pipes, topsoil, limestone, fountains and columns.
