The United States will stop providing Israel with $4 billion a year in aid in 2027, while continuing to sell weapons to the country, President Donald Trump said during a phone interview with Fox on Tuesday, the day of the midterm elections.
Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had raised the idea and that the two leaders had been discussing it for a couple of years. He argued that Israel did not need the assistance and that it represented a significant expense for the United States.
Trump described the $4 billion as military equipment or cash, and said the issue had become a political target for Democrats, including Abdul El-Sayed, a Michigan Senate candidate. He added that Israel would remain able to purchase US arms, saying it could buy what it wanted.
The current US-Israel security assistance agreement provides for about $3.8 billion annually through 2028. Netanyahu has said he wants Israel to reduce its reliance on US military aid, although no timeline or terms for changing the agreement have been detailed.
