The 2026 midterm results came into focus unusually quickly on election night, with early returns pointing to a Democratic wave. NBC analyst Steve Kornacki reacted to the first Indiana results with an emphatic “Wow,” as the coverage began to reflect the scale of the shift.

The surprise was audible across networks. Fox News reacted as it called the Texas Senate and governor’s races for Democrats. On MS NOW, Rachel Maddow announced the first Democratic Senate victory in Kansas since 1932 and said, “I can’t quite believe it.”

Unlike election nights when results remain uncertain for hours or days, Tuesday’s stream of percentages, benchmarks and counties changing from Republican to Democratic support gave viewers a clear sense of the outcome early on. The networks’ large data displays filled with figures that challenged their analysts to keep pace.

The numbers showed the movement, but the reactions in the studios conveyed its significance. Even before networks formally called a Democratic takeover of Congress, CBS’s Major Garrett described the early direction of the results as “blue-hued.”
