Eighteen people were killed in an airstrike on Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said the settlement was hit several times by more than ten bombs, one of which struck an air-raid shelter directly. Komyshuvakha lies about 25 kilometres east of Zaporizhzhia and more than a dozen kilometres from the front line.
Zelenskyy alleged that Russia knew residents still in Komyshuvakha gathered there each week to receive humanitarian aid. He described the attack as a deliberate signal against prospects for peace, although the claims were not independently confirmed in the report.
Ukraine also accused Russian forces of using a recent ceasefire around the occupied town of Oleschky to strengthen their positions. Sky News cited aerial imagery and statements from a Ukrainian monitoring post, according to which Russian troops moved heavy equipment, weapons and ammunition into Oleschky and nearby villages before, during and after the evacuation of civilians.
A Ukrainian Marine Infantry Brigade stationed near Kherson said it had observed repeated alleged violations of the truce, including increased Russian military traffic on roads previously unusable because of mines and shelling. The ceasefire, which ended on Sunday, had been arranged to help or evacuate around 2,000 people trapped in Oleschky. Unconfirmed figures indicated that approximately 750 people left, most travelling to Ukrainian-controlled territory. Moscow rejected a Ukrainian proposal to extend the truce.
Indonesia has urged Moscow to stop recruiting its citizens after reports that an Indonesian national who fought for Russia in Ukraine had been killed. Earlier Ukrainian intelligence reports said at least eight Indonesians were serving in the Russian army after allegedly being attracted by promises of high wages, civilian jobs, citizenship and social benefits. Indonesia’s embassy in Moscow is examining the reports, including concerns that some recruits may have been victims of human trafficking.
Both Ukraine and Russia reported problems involving emergency-warning applications. Ukraine’s air force said the Air Alert app may have been compromised by an enemy and stressed that there was no radiation threat. Russia later reported a major cyberattack on its own warning app, saying false information had been sent to residents. Its civil protection authorities did not identify those responsible, and the ministry’s warning website was temporarily unavailable.
In other developments, Zelenskyy said Ukraine could stop attacks on Russian oil facilities if the United States supplied missiles, arguing that Kyiv could not remain inactive after Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He also again said he was ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey, while rejecting Putin’s proposal for a meeting in Moscow.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Chinese President Xi Jinping had rejected the idea of a three-way Ukraine summit involving the United States, Russia and China. According to Steinmeier, Xi viewed the war as a European conflict and said European countries would need to take part in any summit.
