“Mogging” went mainstream in 2026, with its usage increasing by 210%, according to the BBC report. The slang Word has gained popularity among members of Generations Z and Alpha, both online and in everyday conversation.
Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins English Dictionary, said the dictionary’s lexicographers consider how frequently words are used and analyse usage patterns to identify emerging language trends.
Beecroft said the choice of “mogging” as word of the year reflects how each generation leaves its mark on language. BBC culture correspondent Noor Nanji explains the term in the report.
