At least seven people have died aboard a boat carrying nearly 140 occupants that was rescued early this morning around 150 kilometres northeast of Arrecife, Lanzarote, according to sources from Spain’s Maritime Rescue service.

Only two of the bodies were recovered, as they remained on the boat. Survivors said the other five people were thrown overboard into the Atlantic, although the circumstances surrounding those deaths have not yet been clarified.

The night from Saturday into Sunday saw renewed activity along the Canary Islands migration route. Two operations took place near Lanzarote and another near El Hierro, involving almost 300 people according to initial, provisional counts.
