Giuseppe Conte has called for Italy’s citizenship income scheme to be revised so it can better serve people in genuine difficulty. The Five Star Movement leader made the remarks on the sidelines of an event in Rome.
Conte said proposals had been updated in light of experience and that his party would discuss them at negotiating tables. He described the central issue as ensuring the support is genuinely useful to those who need it.
He also said the measure had not been abolished by Giorgia Meloni’s government, but had changed its name to the Inclusion Allowance. Conte accused the government of cutting support for poor people while directing resources to arms manufacturers, energy companies, banks and insurance firms.
