Italy marked the National Unity and Armed Forces Day with strong messages regarding national cohesion and the necessity of robust defense. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that without defense there is no security, and without security there is no freedom. In his message, Crosetto emphasized that celebrating national unity requires recognizing a shared community, respecting differences, and collectively assuming responsibility for the future.
President Sergio Mattarella laid a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome, joined by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other top institutional leaders. The ceremony concluded with the traditional flyover by the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team. This year's commemoration was also marked by mourning for four military personnel who went missing on October 29 in Bosnia-Herzegovina during a helicopter crash while participating in Operation Eufor Althea.
The celebrations subsequently moved to Florence, where President Mattarella addressed the current global security landscape. He noted that alongside traditional conflicts affecting Europe and other regions, new threats have emerged, including widespread disinformation, competition in space, cyber dimensions, and the pervasive use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Mattarella described these domains as areas where acts of aggression are expanding worryingly, requiring a deep capacity for renewal and the rapid integration of new technologies to meet future challenges.
Defense Minister Crosetto thanked President Mattarella for his support, strength, and determination in guiding the country during this dramatic crisis and epochal change. Crosetto argued that only solid values and a clear vision of right and wrong can respond to such times, adding that the armed forces need institutions that understand their work and support them. This message comes ahead of the expected approval of a thirteenth aid package for Kiev in the coming weeks.
General Luciano Portolano, Chief of Staff of Defense, expressed his thoughts on the fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifice as the highest expression of dedication to service and unconditional love for the homeland. He also saluted the city of Florence, recalling the tragic flood of November 4, 1966, during which the Armed Forces and the Guardia di Finanza provided generous relief to thousands of citizens alongside other institutions.
In a separate tribute, President Mattarella presented the Gold Medal for Military Valor to the mother of David Tobini. The posthumous recognition honors the paratrooper corporal of the Folgore Brigade, who was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan in July 2011.
