Members of the European Parliament are concerned that fundamental rights could be affected by plans to expand the mandate of Frontex, the EU border agency.
Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner presented the proposed overhaul last week. It would give Frontex a broader role, including strategic planning, coordinating resources to make returns more cost-efficient and providing support for reintegration. The agency could also help non-EU countries carry out deportations from their territory.
On Wednesday, Brunner discussed the plans with MEPs on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee.
