North Korea says it has tested a cluster munition warhead for a cruise missile, reporting the test within days of a separate test involving a ballistic missile. The country released photographs of the latest test, according to the report.
Unlike ballistic missiles, cruise missiles fly at low altitude and can be steered during flight. Cluster munitions release numerous smaller explosive devices over a wide area. Their effects are difficult to control, and unexploded devices can remain a danger to civilians long after an attack.
North Korea claims the tested warhead could devastate an area of five to six hectares. That figure has not been independently verified. It is also unclear whether the system is ready for deployment or what its range is.
