A dispute over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal is becoming a major political dividing line ahead of the 2027 election. The court, housed in a palace in central Warsaw, has become the focus of protests and a police presence.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal, pro-EU government wants to reverse changes made to the tribunal under the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government. It argues that an overhaul is needed to restore the rule of law and bring the court into line with EU standards on impartiality.

President Karol Nawrocki is resisting efforts to remove PiS-aligned judges from control of the court. His supporters accuse Tusk’s government of attempting a coup.
