Democrats scored victories Tuesday in several congressional districts that Republicans had redrawn in an effort to strengthen their position ahead of the midterms. By Tuesday night, many of the party’s redistricting efforts had failed, according to the results reported in the source material.

In Florida, Democrats Kathy Castor, Pia Dandiya and Jared Moskowitz won in redrawn districts, according to Associated Press race calls. In North Carolina, Democratic Rep. Don Davis retained his 1st District seat, despite a new map intended to make the district more competitive for Republicans. The Downballot estimated that Donald Trump would have won the redrawn district by nearly 12 percentage points.

Alabama Democrat Shomari Figures also held on to the state’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District, according to an AP race call. Republicans had revised the state’s congressional map after the U.S. Supreme Court further weakened the Voting Rights Act earlier this year. In Texas, the first state to redraw its map at Trump’s urging, Democrats had won several of the newly drawn districts.

Republicans had expected voters who supported Trump in 2024 to back them in this election. In Texas, the party had counted on improved support among Latino voters under the new map, but many of those voters shifted their support to Democrats this year.
