Eva von Angern, leader of the Left Party’s parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt, is considering running for minister-president against AfD politician Ulrich Siegmund. A party spokesperson told the German Press Agency that the group is due to make a decision at its meeting next Tuesday. The proposal would initially apply to a first ballot, the spokesperson said.
Siegmund plans to seek election in the Magdeburg state parliament in December and needs three votes from outside his own ranks to secure a majority. The CDU parliamentary group has decided to leave the chamber during the vote, although one CDU member has said he intends to remain. The BSW plans to abstain, leaving Siegmund’s path to a majority uncertain.
