Spain’s government is working to dismantle the temporary accommodation facilities set up in Ceuta following the migration crisis, Inclusion, Social Security and Migration Minister Elma Saiz said on Monday. The process is expected to begin as soon as possible.

Speaking at the World in Progress forum in Barcelona, organised by Prisa, Saiz said the removal of the additional places would be an important sign that normality was returning to the autonomous city months after the mass arrival of migrants.

She said the number of temporary reception places had increased from 500 after the crisis to more than 7,500. These places can now be reduced because many return procedures no longer need to be completed, with a significant number of migrants having already returned to Morocco.

According to Saiz, around 13,000 people have returned to Morocco. She also highlighted the cooperation of the social organisations managing the reception centres.

The minister defended the government’s response to the situation in Ceuta, saying it had acted within the law and with humanity rather than responding from a position of hatred.
