Poland’s political crisis deepened on Tuesday as President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk traded increasingly heated accusations over the country’s Constitutional Tribunal and the appointment of its judges.

Nawrocki accused Tusk of using the dispute to carry out an illegal power grab. Tusk said action on the court was vital to preserving the rule of law in Poland, an EU member state.

The conflict centers on judicial appointments made by the previous government, led by the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), which remained in power until 2023. The dispute has been ongoing for more than a decade.
