English football has continued through the season as usual, even as Manchester City faces an unresolved financial case. An independent commission found the club guilty of extensive financial misconduct in late September. City has appealed, while the Premier League is considering possible sanctions. Until the case is settled, the significance of the team’s results remains uncertain.

Enzo Maresca, who took charge of City this season, was not involved during the period covered by the alleged breaches. He has nevertheless inherited the challenge of following Pep Guardiola, who won 17 titles in ten years at the club. Maresca previously spent a season as Guardiola’s assistant in 2022-23, when City won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Maresca has said he would have accepted the job even if he had known about the commission’s decision. He has also expressed confidence in the club’s leadership and its appeal, saying he believes those in charge will do the right thing. At the same time, he has said he is focused on football and does not understand the legal issues surrounding the case.

On the pitch, City sit second in the Premier League after nine matches, behind defending champions Arsenal. The team won eight consecutive games in all competitions between August 23 and October 11, with no obvious break from the possession-based approach Maresca shares with Guardiola.

City’s recent momentum has since dipped: the team lost 2-1 to Aston Villa and 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion in its last two league matches. The defeat to Brighton handed Arsenal the lead, although Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler said his side had benefited from luck it had worked to earn.

City travel to RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday, seeking a response. Erling Haaland has scored nine Premier League goals and four in two Champions League appearances this season. He has also scored 12 times in eight matches against Leipzig for Borussia Dortmund and City, including five goals in City’s 7-0 win in the 2022-23 Champions League round of 16. Maresca was part of Guardiola’s coaching staff for that match.

City have beaten Porto and AEK Athens in this season’s Champions League but lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain. With the club’s potential sanctions still unresolved—from a fine to exclusion, according to the report—Maresca’s task of pursuing titles is unfolding alongside uncertainty over what the season’s results may ultimately mean.
